Valentine’s Day is one of my favorite times for crafting. There are so many ways to be inspired and such a huge variety of projects create. It’s the perfect opportunity for family to gather and celebrate the idea of Valentine’s Day together.
One of the most common questions I get from moms is how they can spend more time with their children, especially teenagers. They want fun, creative crafts that can be done by the entire family. Well, this holiday is perfect for just that. Creating Valentine’s inspired gifts is a project children, teens and adults will all enjoy.
I have a great tutorial for Valentine's inspired tote bags that couldn't be easier. I’ll show you step by step how to create a functional and stylish Valentine’s Day tote. You'll be able to find nearly everything you need right at Target. So moms, grab your supplies and gather your family, this will be a craft everyone will love! And isn’t that what Valentine’s Day is really all about.
YOU'LL NEED:
- Canvas or Straw Tote Bag
- Silhouette White Sticker Paper
- Foam Pouncer
- Handmade Modern Acrylic Paint white, pink
- Fabric Medium
- Printable stencil template
Print out your free heart ombre stencil printable by right-clicking on the image and choosing "Save Image as." Save your image to your PC (remember what folder you save it in) Use your printer software to print image, full size, on your 8 1/2 x 11 size silhouette sticker paper.
BEGIN BY:
Step 1: Iron your canvas bag to remove any fold lines or creases. If you're using a straw tote you can omit this step. Step 2: Fold printed template along dotted lines. Cut our heart shapes. Step 3: Peel off backing a press firmly on bag. Step 4: Mix pink paint into the white adding a little at a time until desired color is achieved. Step 5: Add fabric medium following manufacturer labeled instructions. Martha Stewart Crafts Fabric Medium uses a ratio of 1 part medium to 2 parts paint. Step 6: Sparingly dip pouncer into paint. Blot off extra onto scrap paper or paper plate. Apply lightly using and up and down "pouncing" motion. Avoid overloading your areas with too much paint. Step 7: Remove stencil while paint is still wet. Dry thoroughly according to manufacturer's recommendations before using.
Try experimenting with different colors to create a vibrant rainbow effect. You could even mix in a little metallic paint for a bag that really shines. Target also has a great line of stencils that would allow you to personalize your bag and give it your own unique style. No matter what design you choose to create you'll do it spending time with the ones you love, the perfect way to celebrate the season.
